Course Description

High-quality paediatric resuscitation skills are essential to improving survival rates in infants and children experiencing cardiac arrest or other life-threatening emergencies. In healthcare settings, every second counts, and staff must be prepared to act quickly, confidently, and in accordance with current paediatric resuscitation guidelines. It is a core professional responsibility for healthcare workers to recognise early signs of deterioration in children, initiate life-saving interventions, and work effectively as part of a paediatric resuscitation team.

Recent reviews of emergency care incidents have highlighted the vital role that prompt, effective Paediatric Basic Life Support (PBLS) plays in improving outcomes for infants and children. While the fundamental principles of paediatric resuscitation remain constant, regular training is essential to maintain competence, as recommended techniques and practices continue to evolve. This CSTF-aligned Level 2 course ensures that healthcare professionals have the knowledge and skills to perform safe, effective PBLS in both clinical and non-clinical settings.

What You Will Learn

a) Understand national guidelines and local resuscitation policies and procedures.

b) Know how to recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care in accordance with local policy.

c) Be able to initiate an appropriate emergency response, which may include the management of choking and the use of the recovery position, in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

d) Be able to provide basic airway management, i.e., ensure an open airway.

e) Be able to initiate and maintain effective lung ventilations in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

f) Be able to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

g) Understand their individual role and responsibilities in responding to persons in emergency situations.

h) Understand their individual responsibilities in reporting and recording details of an emergency event accurately.

i) Understand the importance of undertaking any resuscitation interventions within the limits of their personal capabilities and in the context of any previous training received.

j) Know how they should apply the local Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) Policy or anticipatory care decision within the clinical context.

Assessment & Certification

Includes a knowledge assessment. On successful completion, a CSTF-aligned certificate is issued (valid for 1 year). Practical skills validation may be required locally.

This course meets the outcomes for: Core Skills Training Framework subject 9, Resuscitation – Level 2 (Paediatric Basic Life Support); and Care Certificate Standard 12, Basic Life Support.
